One of my favorite shows in the whole world is The Biggest Loser. I have been heavy for most of my life, and a couple of years ago I lost fifty pounds, and I feel so wonderful! It is amazing the changes that weight loss brings into my self-esteem and self recognition. I am so much more proud of who I am and I have so much more energy to do the things I’ve always wanted to do. Watching The Biggest Loser, I see their struggles for overcoming their old habits and doubts and becoming a new person and see themselves in a new light. I am not a big fan of all the drama and yelling and that kind of stuff. But to see them reach their goals and to lose weight, it is just so inspiring! I always cry when I watch it and it motivates me to continue with my weight loss plan, no matter how hard it may be. When I am at the gym and I’m running or weight lifting or whatever, and I don’t want to keep going, I imagine Jilian yelling at me (she scares me the most) and it really does inspire me to keep going and to work harder. If these people that are a lot heavier than I can do these crazy amazing things, then I can do it too!

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009Does Horse Shampoo Really Strengthen Hair?
Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009I have a roommate that has beautiful hair, and pretty much beautiful everything. Well, I noticed that she has a bottle of horse shampoo and I was totally shocked! Her hair is beautiful, shiny, thick and full of volume, but I am wondering if her hair is naturally like that, or if the horse shampoo really does work. I have decided to turn to the internet, the source of all sources. So, horse shampoos are designed to clean, thicken and condition the mane and tail of horses. Since, human hair and horse hair are similar in construction; the shampoo will do much the same for both. However, you should be aware that these products work by swelling the hair shaft, leaving it feeling rougher and more straw-like, and may not be good for those with very fine hair. Fine hair could be damaged by the swelling action. So, as I read the different articles, they specify that the best way to strengthen and grow hair is to take the proper vitamins and condition your hair properly. They say that getting enough protein in your diet is also very important since that hair is made up mostly of keratinized protein.
Chemotherapy Related Hair Loss
Monday, September 21st, 2009My grandmother has been diagnosed with cancer. It is always a horrible and scary thing. She has been undergoing chemotherapy and has lost most of her hair. My grandmother has always had beautiful curly hair and it is so sad to see her wearing a wig or hats. Seeing her hair falling out in clumps and made me wonder why hair falls out during chemo treatments, so I decided to look into it.
Chemotherapy is the administration of drugs that destroy the rapidly growing cancer cells. But, the kicker is that hair and nails are also rapidly reproducing. Chemotherapy drugs are poisonous to the cells of the hair root responsible for hair shaft formation. Usually, the hair is lost rapidly in large quantities during treatment. And what is sad, is that no hair growth stimulants, shampoos, or cosmetic treatments can stop the hair loss. What’s good though is that once the treatments have stopped, the hair usually grows back. When it grows back the hair can be a different texture and color at first until the hair shaft cells return to normal. After I found this out, it made me hopeful that my grandmother’s beautiful curls will return and that she will still be as beautiful as she always is.
Women and Hair Loss
Wednesday, September 16th, 2009I have been losing my hair since my early twenties, and it is considered to be male patterned baldness. How horrible is that? It is the most embarrassing thing ever! But, as I have researched things I can do, I learned how important it is to know the underlying cause of the hair loss and to try and reverse it before it is too late. Here are some of the reasons why women can lose their hair: hereditary, hormonal imbalance (like thyroid problems and a simple pill every day can be taken to reverse the hair loss), stress, pregnancy, medications, diets and aging. I also learned that hair products can be the cause for my hair loss. Some of these products have different kinds of chemicals that actually cause hair loss! So, to avoid that problem, use high quality hair products that will insure the healthy, more natural ingredients which can help the healthiness of your hair and also restore some that has been lost. I have tried some products (shampoos and conditioners) that are specifically for hair restoration, and I have gone to the doctor to see if I have a hormonal imbalance, but still nothing. So, I am still on the hunt to find my cause for my hair loss so I can get it reversed and not be bald by the time I’m 50!
Horsetail for Hair Growth
Tuesday, September 15th, 2009There are so many hair loss products for women, and it can be very confusing to know just where to start. The key is to understand the reasons behind your hair loss and to use the best proven natural ingredients to reverse it.
Personally, I feel the best hair loss products for women should be as natural as possible, especially as the most common cause of female pattern baldness and thinning is hormonal, down to an excess of the hormone DHT. What does DHT do? Well, it attaches to hair follicles and makes them smaller until the hair eventually comes out. This is very common in post-menopausal women as estrogen levels drop rapidly and estrogen helps to keep down the levels of DHT.
There are vitamins, minerals and herb extracts that proven that can prevent excess DHT and encourage new growth. The best vitamins and minerals are vitamin B, Biotin and the minerals magnesium and zinc.
Hair loss products for women should also contain an herb extract called Horsetail – yes, I know it sounds weird, but it works – which has been used since Roman times and helps to boost circulation to the scalp and helping new growth also when combined with the others.
Locks of Love
Tuesday, September 15th, 2009I have a friend who every eighteen months, cuts her hair and donates it to the Locks of Love. It starts just below her chin and she grows it until it reaches ten inches long. She is a great example to me of service and charity. Locks of Love is a non-profit charity based organization that accepts donations of human hair and money to make wigs for needy children who have lost their due to medical conditions.
Locks of love accepts hair from people of all ages, races and nationalities. The donation must be at least ten inches long and they specify that curly hair can be pulled straight to meet the requirement. They also specify that hair cannot be bleached or chemically damaged, but dyed hair is acceptable. They do no accept dreadlocks and the donation must be in a pony tail or braid. They also accept cash donations which can be a tax deduction.
I think Locks of Love is a wonderful organization that helps those little children feel good about at least one aspect of their life. Hair is such an important factor to ones identity and style and children with medical conditions and those important growing years of these children are so important for them to find who they are!
Which Hair Loss Treatments To Choose
Sunday, September 13th, 2009You know, I was searching on the internet about hair loss and products that can help me with my problem and I am very confused. Each site says something different and each site has some magical ingredient that is the only substance that can help or reverse hair loss. So, who can I trust? How do I know if it is just a ploy to get people to buy their crappy product or if it actually does work and more people should know about their product? Do I just trust the expensive salon shampoos and conditioners or do I just give one of these mystery miracle shampoo and conditioners a whirl?
In today’s world we are bombarded on all directions with information, the information might not be accurate, but nevertheless it is out there. There are hundreds of sites that talk about hair thickening shampoos or restorative hair products and how do I know which one to choose? I don’t really have an answer for my questions; I am just throwing them out there. Perhaps some day I will get a grand epiphany and comment to everyone about my miracle shampoo and conditioner that I have found. So, until then……
Styling Tips for Thinning Hair
Saturday, September 12th, 2009I have a horrible thinning hair problem and I it is especially noticeable on my scalp. I am extremely embarrassed about this and so here are a few tips I have learned about styling tips to hide my problem. The first is to start with a style and color that helps camouflage the areas that are thinning. Since my hair is thinning on the scalp, the best style for me is to cut my hair short curly or wavy layers with the shortest layers on top.
The short layers give the appearance of more volume. When choosing the right color to hide the bald spots, try and get your hair a similar color as your scalp, that way a light scalp under dark hair is more visible than light hair and a light scalp. Another way is using volumizing techniques, like washing with a volumizing shampoo and conditioner, use a large round brush when blow drying or blow dry your hair with your head upside down to give the most lift to the roots. I personally use these techniques and I often get comments from hair stylists that are surprised my hair looks so thick when really it is quite thin.
Hair Loss Benefits of Rinsing with Cold Water
Thursday, September 10th, 2009I have always heard that rinsing hair in cold water makes it look more shiny and healthy and so I tried it years ago and I am positive it works! That is why I run my hair under water for thirty seconds under cold running water which will help seal the cuticles on the hair shaft. This traps moisture in the hair and creates that gorgeous hair shine like on the commercials. The cold water also constricts the opening of the sebaceous glands to help moderate sebum production on the scalp.
Now, sometimes rinsing with cold water in the shower makes me cringe and I pretty much hate it, but there is a better way. So, if you would rather not rinse in the shower, add cold water to your spray bottle and spray your hair in sections before drying and styling. Another way would be to place your liquid leave-in product in the fridge for 20 minutes while you are showering and spray hair before blow-drying or air drying. And the reward for this cool finish is beautifully shining hair! I have been rinsing with cold water for many years and I just want to share my secret with whoever wants to listen/read.
Eggs & Hair Loss
Wednesday, September 9th, 2009I have been trying all sorts of different products for my hair, and an easy and cheap product that is great for my hair is eggs. I didn’t realize it but egg is a great source of protein for both your body and your hair. So, here is what I do, I take one egg and separate the yolk from the whites and place the yolk in a bowl. I beat the egg yolk thoroughly. I only use the egg yolk because the egg whites are known to dry up the scalp and cause dryness, and after all it is only the yoke that is abundant in protein. Then I wash my hair as normal, and massage the beaten egg yolk into my hair.
Wait five minutes, then rinse with COLD water. If you want to try this, you do not want to rinse the egg from your hair with hot water; the results will not be pleasant. I usually do this once a month and I always notice that my hair stays full and shiny! I always get compliments on my hair and I know it is because I wash my hair with egg yolks. I was reluctant at first to try it, but it has proven effective time and time again.
